ZTE to Mass-Produce Marvell-Powered Optical Networking Products for Ultra-Fast Broadband in China

ZTE to leverage wide range of SoC advantages with Marvell's AVANTA™ family of processors

Santa Clara, California (September 27, 2011) – Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL), a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced that ZTE will mass-produce a variety of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) products for China using Marvell’s AVANTA™ family of processors. The agreement comes just one year after entering into a strategic cooperation relationship between the two companies around fiber-to-the-x (FTTX) solutions—and follows successful field trials with China Telecom. All products meet major telco requirements for EPON and are available today.

AVANTA’s Universal Passive Optical Network (UPON) technology is the world’s only single-chip solution that supports all three fiber media protocols, including EPON, Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and Active Ethernet. Reflecting years of research and development, AVANTA is also first to market with a 1.6GHz CPU, Energy Efficient Ethernet, 1588v2 and line rate IPv4/IPv6/NAT. The chipset also offers green dynamic power management and IEEE 802.3az support; SATA 2.0 personal cloud support for video caching and NAS; and full IPv6 support with integrated PP for networking.

“ZTE chose AVANTA on the basis of a legitimate and reasonable principle that we always follow, which is to pursue the best benefits for our company using strict tender bid procedure. AVANTA, with its high-gigahertz CPU and numerous integrated hardware interfaces, helps us create and deliver compelling services on an accelerated timeline,” said Zhu Yongxing, vice general manager of ZTE Fixed Network Product Lines. “We also chose Marvell’s solution because its SoC architecture is optimized for building common platform for both EPON and GPON. In all, AVANTA is a technology-rich and power-efficient solution that provides a high level of flexibility for modern broadband designs.”

ZTE is currently the number-one PON provider in China. Moreover, at 15 percent year over year, China is one of the fastest-growing FTTX markets in the world. By 2012, the Chinese FTTX subscriber base is expected to top 50 million. ZTE now has the chance to further increase its market share as it rolls out significantly more capable single family units (SFUs) and home gateway units (HGUs) with various forms of Marvell-powered PON technology.

“Our cooperation with ZTE validates the entire AVANTA product line and demonstrates the tremendous market opportunity in FTTX technologies,” said Paul Valentine, vice president of marketing for the Enterprise Business Unit at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. “It also illustrates the extent of Marvell’s market penetration for bringing an ultra-fast, immersive broadband experience to the home and beyond.”
