Las Vegas and Santa Clara, California (January 8, 2013) – Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL) today announced that its G.hn silicon chipset is powering the core of Teleconnect’s omniPOFTM modules for home networking applications using plastic optical fiber (POF). Teleconnect joins the growing list of ODM and OEM partners in the second wave of G.hn design wins for Marvell, accelerating the global adoption of the extensible ITU-T standard designed to provide connectivity at data rates up to 1 Gbit/s over standard home wiring, including electrical wires, coaxial cables, twisted pair and, now with Teleconnect, optical fiber.
Teleconnect, a German engineering firm known for its innovative VDSL2 and optical designs, has adapted Marvell’s G.hn silicon for operation over POF. Support for POF was added to the ITU-T G.hn standard in January 2012, to address the needs of service providers interested in deploying home networks based on optical fiber. Teleconnect’s omniPOF prototype modules are based on Marvell’s GE-DW360F reference design, including the Marvell® 88LX3142 G.hn digital baseband processor, the Marvell 88LX2718 G.hn analog front end, and the Marvell 88E1512 Gigabit PHY with a complete TCP/IP protocol stack.
“By incorporating Marvell’s G.hn silicon into omniPOF modules, Teleconnect ensures the highest level of performance for delivery of high-bandwidth multimedia content over any physical medium in the home,” said Dr.-Ing. Andreas Bluschke, managing director for Teleconnect. “We are very pleased to be partnering with a market leader like Marvell, on delivering innovative solutions that drive the connected lifestyle.”
Since its debut in September 2011, Marvell’s G.hn silicon continues to garner industry support. Marvell’s G.hn chipset won a Best Electronic Design Award in December 2011 and a Connected Home Award in April 2012. Demonstrations at CES and the Asia Plugfest in 2012 generated even more interest in Marvell’s G.hn vision and potential applications of the technology. Most recently, in December 2012, Marvell became the first silicon vendor worldwide to have its silicon achieve full compliance certification from the HomeGrid Forum, paving the way for mass deployments by OEMs of G.hn systems based on the Marvell chipset.
“Marvell is excited to collaborate with Teleconnect, an expert in the field of plastic optical fiber applications. Their omniPOF modules are innovative G.hn-enabled products that showcase the flexibility of our G.hn chipset,” said Winston Chen, vice president of the Smart Home Business Unit at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. “Teleconnect’s product enables consumers and service providers to combine the flexibility and high speed of G.hn technology with the reliability of optical fiber, adding another dimension to our chipset’s any wire, anywhere capabilities. With Marvell’s G.hn silicon at the core of Teleconnect’s modules, they can offer the best performance connectivity over any wire—distributing bandwidth-intensive and real-time applications anywhere in the connected home.”
Marvell G.hn-powered products will be showcased at the Marvell booth (South Hall 3 – Booth 31423) and at the HomeGrid Forum booth (South Hall 1, Booth 21906) during CES at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 8-11, 2013.
