Marvell Delivers Industry’s Smallest PCI Express Fast Ethernet Controller

Marvell Yukon FE+ 88E8040 Reduces Board Real-Estate and System Costs with New Level of Integration

Santa Clara, California (June 5, 2007) – arvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), the leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, today at Computex 2007 announced the Marvell® Yukon® FE+ 88E8040 controller for mobile and desktop PCs. The Yukon FE+ 88E8040 features the industry’s smallest controller package size, with a new level of integration that enables a highly compact PC design while reducing system-level costs. The 88E8040 also delivers a new level of energy efficiency for mobile and desktop PCs along with unsurpassed networking performance.

The 88E8040 is part of Marvell’s Yukon family of pin-compatible Fast Ethernet (FE) and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controllers for PCs. The Yukon family’s pin-compatibility and use of a single driver across all Yukon GbE and FE controllers provides PC vendors with the flexibility to leverage a single motherboard design across a broad range of consumer and enterprise platforms. This latest addition to the Yukon family is available in the pin-compatible 64-pin QFN package, and the smaller footprint 7×7mm 48-pin package; the smallest in the industry for a PCI Express Ethernet controller. The 88E8040 eliminates the need for external passives, voltage regulators, and an external EEPROM by integrating these on the controller, thus reducing manufacturing and bill-of-material (BOM) costs by more than 20% while shrinking the space needed to implement LAN-on-motherboard (LOM).

While offering a tiny footprint, the 88E8040 delivers the industry’s highest performance and lowest power consumption for FE PC connectivity. The 88E8040 packs advanced functionality for highly optimized, smart power-down modes to extend battery time in mobile PCs and to enable the most energy-efficient EnergyStar compliance. The 88E8040 also supports advanced capabilities such as IPv6 and IPv4 checksum offloads and Receive Side Scaling (RSS), thus enabling high network throughput and a better user experience in a variety of residential and enterprise PC applications and networks. As with all Marvell Yukon products, the 88E8040 supports Marvell Virtual Cable Tester® (VCT™) technology, providing advanced cable diagnostics.

“The Yukon FE+ 88E8040 illustrates our commitment to innovation in PC connectivity solutions,” stated David Young, vice president and general manager, Connectivity Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. “By providing a feature-rich LOM controller with a high level of integration and a tiny package size, we are enabling our customers to produce smaller, energy-efficient, high-performance, mobile and desktop PCs, all at a lower total system cost.”

The Marvell Yukon FE+ 88E8040 is currently sampling with tier-one customers.
