Santa Clara, California (November 10, 2008) – a href="http://www.marvell.com" target="_self">Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, today introduced the Marvell® Prestera® 98X2220 multiport 10Gb Ethernet (GbE) media access control/physical layer (MAC/PHY) packet processor with LinkCrypt™ security technology. LinkCrypt is a foundation technology which is designed to harden the existing infrastructure and embed security into the network fabric without compromising operational scalability. With 4 ports of 10GbE and support for line rate packet encryption and decryption capabilities, the Prestera 98X2220 is ideal for building platforms for secure enterprise and service provider networks.
"Marvell has been focused on developing technologies and building an ecosystem to accelerate the evolution of Ethernet from a fundamental LAN interconnect to a secure, converged and enhanced network fabric for enterprises, data centers and service providers," said Awais Nemat, vice president, Enterprise Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. "The Prestera 98X2220 provides an industry leading solution that is designed to allow Marvell's customers to interweave standards-compliant security within existing and future platforms"
With the Prestera 98X2220, Marvell believes network equipment manufacturers can build systems that enable secure data communications at multiples of 10GbE speeds. It is also designed to be interoperable with industry leading network access control solutions, and has flexible options of integrated 10GbE Attachment Unit Interface (XAUI) or 10GbE XFI interfaces on the 10Gb ports which ease system integration.
The Prestera 98X2220 is designed to enable deployment of secure 10Gb Ethernet links in mission critical networks such as those used in the financial, defense and healthcare sectors. Line rate packet encryption and decryption notwithstanding- the Prestera 98X2220 has one of the lowest incremental power consumption rates per gigabit of encrypted/decrypted traffic in the industry today – less than 800mW per 10GbE port. Furthermore, compliance with IEEE 802.1AE standard is anticipated to ensure compatibility with existing network security solutions and IT network monitoring tools. By maintaining authentication of networked devices and providing integrity and robustness to unsecured protocols, the Prestera 98X2220 is expected to reduce the risk of virus/worm propagation as well as Denial of Service or IP Spoofing attacks.
Just as 802.11i extends the 802.1X authentication model to continuously protect data for the Wireless LAN, LinkCrypt technology extends the IEEE 802.1X model to protect data for the wired Ethernet on a link by link basis. Innovative technologies such as LinkCrypt are anticipated to enable the development of a new generation of data communications products for secure enterprise, data center and Ethernet networks. Designed as a horizontal technology to scale from 10's of Mbps to 100's of Gbps performance, LinkCrypt technology can be applied across a broad portfolio of products. Compliant with the IEEE 802.1AE (Link Layer Security) standard, LinkCrypt has demonstrated interoperability with a variety of industry leading solutions and compatibility with other third party software and hardware security solutions.
The Marvell Prestera 98X2220 is available now.
